THENMALA

It is India's first planned eco-tourism destination, which is gaining popularity due to its unique vistas and bio-diversity. Situated about 72kms from the State Capital Thiruvananthapuram and 66 kms east of Kollam. The Thenmala Eco-Tourism shares its resources with the famous Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary at the foothills of the Western Ghats.

The Shenduruny Wild Life Sanctuary gets its name from an endemic Species of tree called Chenkuruny or Shenkuruny and the sanctuary spread over a 100 sq kms surrounding the Thenmala Dam reservoir. The Shenduruny Wild Life Sanctuary is a evergreen forest and home for animals like Elephants, Leopards, Bisons, Sambar deer, wild boar, Lion-taied macaqus, Deer and most of other regular inhabitants.

The word Thenmala in the local language Malayalam has an interesting meaning. 'Then' means honey and 'Mala' means hill; and they combine to mean 'Honey Hill'. It is believed that the honey collected from this region is of very good quality owing to its unique biological settings. Thenmala is a unique destination from a visitor's point of view.
